Diwali (or Festival of Lights) is a Hindu festival and celebrations occur over a number of days. The dates for Diwali are based on the Hindu calendar - Diwali takes place in the latter half of the last month of the Hindu year. Almost half the population of Fiji Islands is Indo Fijian and this is an important public holiday. Buildings and homes of the Indo Fijian community are decorated with flashing lights and special sweets are cooked at this time.
