Rotuma Day
13 May 2008
- Suva, Capital of Fiji Islands
Rotuma Day is celebrated on the small island of Rotuma (far north-west of the main islands of Fiji) each year. Officially the 13th May, celebrations are usually held on the nearest weekend. For 2008, this is 10th - 11th May. Rotumans celebrate the day that Rotuma was ceded to Great Britain. Dance is a feature of the celebrations, including young Rotuman children, and a way of ensuring the tradition and culture of Rotuma persists for future generations. The festival is held in Suva.
